Mental Health Awareness Week: Looking After Your Mental Wellbeing

A blog about looking after your mental health

Mental Health Awareness Week is an important reminder that our mental health matters just as much as our physical health. Life can feel overwhelming at times, and many people silently struggle with stress, anxiety, loneliness, burnout, or low mood. Taking time to care for our mental wellbeing is not a luxury, it is essential!

Looking after your mental health does not mean you have to feel positive all the time. It means recognising when you need support, creating healthy habits, and allowing yourself space to rest, recover, and grow. Small daily actions can make a big difference over time.

Why Mental Health Matters

Good mental health helps us cope with life’s challenges, build healthy relationships, and feel more balanced emotionally. When we neglect our wellbeing, stress can build up and begin to affect our sleep, energy, confidence, relationships, and physical health.

Mental health struggles can affect anyone, men and women of all ages and backgrounds. That’s why creating safe spaces to talk openly and without judgement is so important – and at Future Living Hertford, we do just that with our low cost counselling and regular groups, aiming  to reduce isolation,

Simple Ways to Support Your Mental Wellbeing

Here are some practical things that can help improve and maintain mental wellbeing:

1. Talk to Someone

Opening up to a trusted friend, family member, or counsellor can ease emotional pressure and remind you that you are not alone.

2. Get Outside

Fresh air, daylight, and movement can have a positive impact on mood and stress levels. Even a short walk can help clear your mind.

3. Prioritise Rest and Sleep

Sleep plays a huge role in emotional wellbeing. Try to create a calming evening routine and give yourself permission to rest.

4. Stay Connected

Isolation can make difficult feelings feel heavier. Staying connected with supportive people can improve emotional resilience.

5. Be Kind to Yourself

Many people are their own harshest critics. Practising self-compassion and speaking to yourself with kindness can make a real difference.

6. Limit Stress Where Possible

Taking breaks, setting boundaries, and reducing overwhelm can help protect your mental wellbeing.

7. Seek Professional Support

Sometimes we need extra support — and that’s okay. Counselling can provide a safe, confidential space to talk, reflect, and work through challenges at your own pace.

You Don’t Have to Face Things Alone

Mental Health Awareness Week encourages us all to check in with ourselves and others. Reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Whether you are struggling with anxiety, stress, low mood, or simply feeling overwhelmed, remember that support is available. Everyone deserves a safe space to be heard, supported, and understood.
